Microsoft Excel 2010 Four-Session Class

Organization:
Saint Paul Public Library
Curriculum files:

This 4 session class covers vocabulary, navigation, and basic functions of Microsoft Excel. You will learn to: enter information, add new worksheets, enter formulas, make a budget, and create basic charts.

Required Experience: Students must have basic typing skills and be comfortable using the mouse.

Detailed Description:
This is an excerise-based class. Every session begins with a brief introduction to the day's features and concepts, explained along with an instructor example. The students then complete two main activities (and one practice activity as their progress permits) independently, relying on the instructor and classroom aides to answer problems that come up. This class is designed for a computer lab environment where the instructor can project an image of their computer for the class to see. However, you may also substitute a computer-projector set-up with solely lecturing and guiding students in their independent progress. Similarly, you can teach to a group of students who are using desktop computers, laptop computers, etc.

Using the Mac Operating System

International Education Center

This Lesson Plan includes two Handouts:

The Mac Operating System:  This handout gives students information about the basics of the Mac Operating System.  It will probably require some explaining on the teacher's end and some practice on the student's end, but it should be something that students can refer back to.  During the first half of class I let students practice changing their computer's settings and opening new files and windows.

Practice Customizing your Computer:  This is a set of challenges for the students to practice using the Mac.  In the past I have let students try the first challenge, and if one of them completes it, have that student explain it to the rest of the class.  This will give students a chance to practice giving and taking directions on using the computer.
